Publicart Works director Merran Morrison’s article has been published on the June issue of New Planner journal. New Planner is the journal of the New South Wales planning profession published by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). The journal provides a forum for news, opinion and the exchange of ideas on urban and regional planning in NSW and abroad.
In the article, Merran explains the importance of public art in empowering communities and subcultures; “Public artists are mediators and ciphers of public culture, interpreting local narrative, listening to communities, and mining the archives to create new ways of seeing based on critical social, environmental and political issues. Public artists can help communities deal with loss, repair and stimulate political engagement, becoming a touchstone for peoples’ connection with each other as human beings.”
